Foxy and I headed to *Lincoln County* and south yesterday to work on
some county
birding <http://www.coloradocountybirding.com/>. First stop was Kinney Lake
SWA where as soon as we got out of the car we could see the obvious activity
in the Russian Olives below the dam. The first bird that caught my eye was
a "Western" Flycatcher. Working the trees were a Wilson's
Warbler, Myrtle Warbler, Ruby Crowned Kinglet, White-crowned Sparrow, Great
Horned Owl, and even an angry Virginia Rail. Heading back to the truck a
group of Yellow-rumped Warblers were working the base of one of the large
trees when up popped a *Nashville Warbler*. Finally checking out the trees
were the road passes through them an *Eastern Phoebe* was perched in the
deep shadow.

Next stop Karvel SWA, which never disappoints me when it comes to county
birding. Pied-billed Grebe, Brown Thrasher and Turkey Vulture were new
addition.

Moving south to *Crowley County* and a stop at Box Springs in hopes of
shorebirds. Greater Yellowlegs, Gadwall and a Sora were the only birds on
the water. I talked to a few hunters that told me yesterday there were
hundred of ducks on the water, mostly coots. A *Townsend's Solitaire* dropped
in for a brief visit. The feedlots at Lake Meredith had many Franklin's
Gulls. a Also, a dozen Lesser Yellowlegs and a few Killdeer ended my
shorebird sightings for the day.

Dove

Ford, in
*Otero County*, for a lunch stop and a search for five doves was the next
stop. After lunch we walked around town finding 1 mourning dove, 3 Eurasian
Collared-Doves and a large flock of Rock Pigeons flying over Foxy was tied
of birding so we headed back to the truck. One fly over *White-winged
Dove* and
we ended up with 4 out of 5.

We ended the day hiking Dry Bluff (5260') in the Comanche National
Grasslands in the southwest corner of the county. A *Green-tailed Towhee* that
hopped across the county line into Las Animas county, a pair of flyover
Chihuahuan Ravens, Western Meadowlarks and Northern Flickers were the birds
found while hiking. Also, some tarantulas. But, while driving we came
across two covey of Scaled Quail.
