Jason Beason, Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory Tuesday, October 25, 7:15 p.m., Boulder Unitarian Universalist Church, 5001 Pennsylvania Ave. Black swifts nest behind waterfalls in remote mountain canyons. Until recently, we knew very little about their migratory and wintering habits. In 2009 researchers from Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory paired with the US Forest Service to track four radio transmitter-equipped swifts from nesting areas in Colorado to wintering areas in South America. The data from the devices indicate that three of the four swifts spent the winter of 2010 in a country south of the equator that currently has no sighting records for this species. Jason will tell us how the researchers pulled off this amazing feat and also explore the unique nesting ecology of these fabulous birds. Conversation and general hobnobbing begins at 6:45.
