Walker & McClain pits came into their own this afternoon,after the snow; Urling
& I checked them between 5 and 6 p.m.

At Walker we saw 42 Sandhill Cranes apparentlysettled in for the night;
meanwhile a different flock of 350 flew overhead, past our houseand headed
south.(The cranes on the Walker spit ignored the migrating flock.) Walker also
had one Greater Yellowlegs, 29 American Wigeons,and 91 Gadwalls; a coot and 26
Canada Geese. Plus pipits (heard only), 2Killdeer, and a Red-tail. (It’s had
50-60 Gadwalls all week.)

McClain sported 55 Long-billed Dowitchers, 44 Ring-neckedDucks, 7 Buffleheads,
3 Lesser Scaup, and a smattering of other waterfowl.

A chance that the Walker cranes will overnight and stay intothe morning for a
little while.

Walker pit: go ½ mile west from the Franktown traffic light,north on Walker
Road (very slippery) to the bend.
McClain pit: go not quite ½ mile west from the Franktowntraffic light, south on
Castlewood Canyon Road a half-mile, park in thedriveway on the left.
