COBirders, Dan Maynard and I poked around parts of southern Colorado yesterday checking mostly bodies of water. For the most part it was a day of nothing unexpected. We saw zero Loons or Scoters at the eleven bodies of water we looked at. That being said, there were lots and lots of waterfowl on a few of the lakes and maybe the most I have ever seen on Trinidad Lake. We did do a small amount of land birding too, like a small section of the riverwalk in Trinidad and another spot along the Purgatoire River just east of Trinidad. Both of these locations were almost bird-less.
We did see the continuing LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at San Luis lakes (Alamosa county), previously reported by John Rawinski. This bird looks quite similar to a bird photographed in mid-September at Timnath Reservoir in Larimer county. There are some patches of white in the wings that the bird at Timnath also showed. Unfortunately, do to the distance, I could not get any photographs so that a closer comparison could be made. We also had an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER at Smith Reservoir just south of the town of Blanca in Costilla county. Here is a list of what I considered the more notable things we saw yesterday: Trinidad State Junior College campus (Las Animas county): 1 Townsend's Warbler 6 Yellow-rumped Warblers Trinidad Lake State Park (Las Animas county): 1 Blue-winged Teal 1 Long-billed Dowitcher (appeared to be hurt, shorebirds are scare at this lake in my experience) San Luis Lakes (Alamosa county): 1 ad. Lesser Black-backed Gull 8 Herring Gulls 2 California Gulls 1 Horned Grebe Smith Reservoir (Costilla county, very low): 1 Red-breasted Merganser 600 Sandhill Cranes 4 Black-bellied Plovers 1 American Golden-Plover 12 Long-Billed Dowitchers 1 Bonaparte's Gull Lathrop State Park, Martin Lake (Huerfano county): 1 Franklin's Gull 1 Red-breasted Merganser ----- Mark Peterson Colorado Springs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
