Birders, To pick up where Dave left off, I arrived at the dove spot at 9:30 during a pretty good snow squall that continued until I had the dove first at 10:30 for about 30 seconds after I spooked it off the left hand 2 track. I had already walked the area south and north of the 2-tracks and left some birdseed in the 2-tracks on the south side of the area. I then walked the west side for a while, didn't find it and then went to the rest area and grabbed a Subway just up the road. By the way, apparently if you are at that Subway on US 385 before 9 am, the subs are 2 'fers.
I got back to the dove area about 11:15 and at 11:30 as I was just starting to look for the bird again, it flew in from the trees near the river to the south, landed in the small tree in the island between the 2-tracks and dropped down to feed on the bare ground behind that tree. I got some good shots of it feeding as the snow quit and it was almost sunny. It was still feeding when I left at 11:45 and headed to Ovid. It was snowing on and off and then hard snow for a while as I searched for the dove. At Ovid, I also didn't find any wrens but did have Red-bellied Woodpecker, heard a Hairy Woodpecker and called in White-breasted Nuthatches and Downy Woodpeckers. I also had Red-bellied Woodpecker on a road in Logan County as I made my way to I-76 in taking the long way to Holyoke to check out Dave's warbler. I got to the cemetery at 3:15 accompanied by 15 mph winds and freezing temps. I didn't find the warbler during my cold hour long search but had Yellow-shafted Flicker, a LOT of Robins (no Varied thrush that I could find), about 70 Red-winged Blackbirds (didn't find anything else mixed in) and a very interesting hawk that I got some good shots of. It may be a juv Harlan's but could also be a juv Red-tail. I'll send some pictures around. On the way out to Julesburg I had 4 Golden Eagles, a Ferruginous Hawk, several Rough-legged and a Joe Roller sighting on I 76. Just south of the Proctor exit while still in Logan, I had 5 Greater Prairie-Chickens fly over the highway from west to east. It was a cold day with some good rewards.
