Hello COBirders, At Walden ponds this afternoon I saw some small geese. A few pics here: http://twilberding.zenfolio.com/p41301601/slideshow Cackling? No, I would say Canada, Lesser subspecies. Bill not stubby and triangular like Colorado’s Cackling, Richardson’s, and very white breast. Could these geese be the rare Cackling, Traverner’s subspecies? Traverner’s have a “convex bill, not dished. Shorter bill than Lesser Canada Goose. Long-necked and pin-headed.” So I would say no, they’re Lesser Canada Geese. Hope I am on the right track. I managed to eke out 28 species at Walden thanks to the ducks. The sun & mountain backdrop at Walden made for a beautiful afternoon.
