Hello, Birders.

Hannah, Andrew, and I saw--but didn't see well enough--an essentially
black-backed and black-headed goose at Waneka Lake, Boulder County, earlier
today, Tuesday, Dec. 27th. The bird had white around the tail; couldn't get a
great read, but I would say the upper-tail and under-tail coverts. Oh, and the
bird was alive: It raised its head once or twice. Annoyingly, the bird was
facing away from us, the whole time. We had only binoculars, no scope; and the
bird was fairly far off, and it was swarmed by gulls and other geese. Andrew
helpfully suggested that he walk out onto the thin ice and flush the
bird...which I thought was a fine idea, but his sister successfully pleaded
with him not to.

Needless to say, Black Brant--in particular, a bird in formative
plumage--occurred to me as an identification for the bird. But I can't be sure
it wasn't a dark formative Snow Goose. We just didn't see it well enough.

Well, there MAY be a Black Brant in Boulder County. Check the parking lots and
corporate headquarter lawns!
