Adams County:
--A pair of Barrow's Goldeneye was reported by Lowrie on the
Platte River near the pair of green metal benches between the UP bridge
and the
green and white water tower on January 17.
--A drake Barrow's Goldeneye was reported by Trinker on the Platte River
just
south of 88th Ave. in Thornton on January 15. Use parking area at Colo.
Blvd.
and 88th.
--One or two SNOWY OWLs (first report by Plage January 2) continue to
be seen in
the vicinity of Harvest Rd. between 138th Av.and 144th Av at least thru
January 26.
Directions: Take Bromley Lane (152nd) east from I-76 and go 2 miles past
Piccadilly to Harvest Road. Turn right and go south to 138th. On the
26th, one was
seen east of Harvest Rd. between 138th and 144th. When looking
for/observing the
owls, use common sense: park and observe from the shoulders of public
roads so as
to not obstruct traffic; do not walk or drive into fields; do not go up
to people's houses
to ask for information or request permission to enter their property.
Boulder County:
--A TRUMPETER SWAN was reported by Mlodinow at Valmont Reservoir on
January 15.
--1 Lesser Black-backed Gull (2nd yr), 2 Thayer's Gulls, (ad. and 2nd
yr.) were
reported by Mlodinow at McIntosh Reservoir on January 15.
Broomfield County:
--On January 14, Mlodinow reported 2 Thayer's Gulls (1 ad, 1 juv), and a
juvenile ICELAND GULL at Siena Pond. On January 16, King reported a darker
adult Kummlein's ICELAND GULL at Siena Pond. (The small lake off
Sheridan Prky.
near Lowell Blvd.) On Januay 16, Kaempfer reported 1 (1st. cy)
GLAUCOUS-WINGED
GULL, 1 (1st. cy.) Glaucous Gull, and 1 (1st. cy) GREAT BLACK-BACKED
GULL. On
January 18, Drummond reported 1 ad Lesser Black-backed Gull at Siena Pond.
--On January 15 at Anthem Ponds, Mark Miller reported 3 Thayer's Gull,
(1st cy)
a (1st cy) ICELAND GULL, and a (1st cy) Glaucous Gull. On January 18,
Drummond
reported 2 Thayer's Gulls ( 1st cyc), 1 Glaucous Gull (1st cy), 1 Lesser
Black-backed Gull (ad), 1 GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL (1st or 2nd cy), 1
GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL (1st cy) at Anthem Ranch Ponds.
Denver County:
--A female Long-tailed Duck first reported by Wuerthele at Duck Lake in
City
Park on November 22 continues to be seen thru January 25.
Eagle County:
--3 Barrow's Goldeneyes (1 ad drake) were reported by Percival on the
Fryingpan
River at mm 4.5, on January 19.
El Paso County:
--A White-throated Sparrow was seen at the feeders at Fountain Creek
Regional
Park by Stuart on January 14.
--A Harris's Sparrow first reported by Teuton at the feeders at Fountain
Creek
Regional Park on January 3 was seen again on January 15.
Fremont County:
--A Long-tailed Duck was reported by Moss at Brush Hollow Reservoir,
which is
about 15 mi. northeast of Canon City on January 18. The Long-tailed Duck
was
re-found by Percival on January 20, at Brush Hollow Reservoir near the dam.
Garfield County:
--26 Barrow's Goldeneyes were reported by Filby at Coryell Ranch in
Carbondale
on January 24.
Jefferson County:
--The GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW first reported by Henwood last November
at the Red Rocks Trading Post feeder continues to be seen at least thru
January 21.
--Henwood reported 30 Rosy Finches of four species, including at least one
Black were present at Red Rocks Trading Post feeder on January 17.
There have been no further reports of Red Rocks rosy finches.
--At Bear Creek Lake Park, Boat launch area, Henwood reported 2 Harris's
Sparrows (1ad, 1 1-st winter) on December 5. On January 16, Henwood
re-found
both Harris's Sparrows, they were not together, but were in separate
smaller mixed flocks, in the boat launch area.
--A Greater Roadrunner first reported by Roller on Dinosaur Ridge on
January 9 was
seen again on January 26 along Alameda Pkwy. on the west side of
Dinosaur Ridge
(aka Dakota hogback). The best times to try for the Roadrunner seem to
be on mild,
sunny, calm afternoons.
Larimer County:
--On the Loveland CBC on January 1, Komar reported TUNDRA and TRUMPETER
SWAN on Cattail Pond. On January 14, Duarte reported the TRUMPETER SWAN
was just south of Cattail Pond at Ryan Gulch Reservoir on the south side
of the res.
Pueblo County:
--A White-winged Scoter, first reported by Percival on Pueblo Reservoir
on January 12,
was still present on January25; it was seen at the State Wildlife Area
at Pueblo Reservoir.
--1 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 1 Gluacous Gull, and 1 GREAT BLACK-BACKED
GULL continue to be seen at Pueblo Reservoir on the South Shore Marina
tires
at least thru January 25 reported by Maynard.
--2 Black Phoebes reported by Percival at the Pueblo Nature Center, on
January 19,
were seen again on January 25.
--2 White-throated Sparrows were reported by Percival, on January 19, at
the
Pueblo Nature Center. The Black Phoebes and the White-throated Sparrows
were
seen along the river, between the Valco Bridge and the Pueblo Nature
Center,
near the location where the telephone line goes over the dirt trail.
This is on
the North side of the river.
Summit County:
--11 Barrow's Goldeneye (5 M, 6 F) were reported by Nims at the Blue River
Water Treatment Plant on January 14.
--200+ Rosy-Finches were reported by Nims at the top of North Peak at
Keystone
Ski Resort on January 14. Largest number were Brown-capped, but there
were at
least 2 Gray-crowned.
Teller County:
--200+ Rosy-Finches, the bulk of the group were Gray-crowned, a few
Brown-capped, and 1 Black, were reported by Goff in Divide, on January 12.
Directions: Go west on US-24 out of Woodland Park toward Divide. Just
before
you get to Divide there is a stop light at the entrance to the Meadow Park
subdivision. Turn right into the subdivision, go around the traffic circle.
Take the second left on Allison Place and go to the end. The
Rosy-finches were
in the trees all around the cul-de-sac.
The DFO field trip for Saturday, January 28 is to Belmar Park
Leader: KarleenSchofield. Meet leader at 9:00 am on the west side of the
Irongate
office building for a half day trip. From Alameda and Wadsworth go south on
Wadsworth to West Ohio Av. (traffic light). Turn right/west on West Ohio
Av.
and go two short blocks to the parking lot. Birding until about noon.
Bring layers
of clothing, scope if you have one, water, a snack. If questions or
questionable
weather, please call the leader the night before at 303.936.8661.
The DFO field trip for Tuesday, January 31 is to the Canon City area.
Leader: Charles Thornton-Kolbe. Meet at 5:50 am at the Park 'n Ride off
of I-25
at Yale Av (from I-25 from the north and heading south, take the Yale
exit, turn
right on Yale, then an immediate right turn into the parking lot). We
will form
carpools in the Park 'n Ride parking lot area farthest from Yale Av.
Please get there by 5:50 am. This is a full day trip. Bring layers of
clothing
(including rain gear), lunch, water, snacks, scope if you have one,
two-way radios
or cell phone for car-to-car communications, and $15 to $25 for your
share of gas.
If bad weather, come to parking lot, and we will go for it or find
alternative plans.
No need to RSVP.
