Hi Birders,
We spent this weekend clearing lanes and putting up nets, preparing for our opening next Saturday, April 28. This weekend was pretty quiet - we heard or saw all the usual residents but almost no migrants. We had a few nets open mid to late morning today and caught 3 birds. First catch of season was a Song Sparrow - he had been singing constantly from the top of a low willow near the big pond while we were putting up the trio of nets nearby. We went away and he promptly flew in. He appeared ready to breed, and our second catch was likely his mate. Our third bird of the season and final bird of the morning was a female Broad-tailed Hummingbird. The Station will be open mornings from April 28 through June 3; we will be closed May 17-19. Look forward to seeing many of you!
