Today at Totten Reservoir (just outside Cortez, Colorado), we ran into a large, dark-mantled gull that stood out from the Ring-billed, Franklin's, and Bonaparte's Gulls that were also present. The bird had a dark gray mantle, large yellow bill with a red gonydeal spot, and yellow legs. Our initial thought was a Lesser Black-backed Gull.
Later we looked at photos that my wife Heather took and the bill looks very tall from top to bottom and huge overall. This brought up the remote possibility of Yellow-footed Gull! Unfortunately, the large gull and most of the others lifted off and sailed away to the northwest about noon. We don't have a photo posting account but if you want to see photos, e-mail us .
