With CFO just a week away I thought I would do a little scouting in some of
my regular haunts. Started at Lathrop State Park this morning...walking
from North Martin Inlet clockwise around the Martin Lake. The lake is quite
full, so not much shoreline for shorebirds.

Yellow Warblers
Yellow-rumped Warblers
one Black-and-white Warbler
Spotted Towhees
Clarks and Western Grebes (just a few)
Common Yellowthroats
one lone American White Pelican
one Chipping Sparrow singing his little heart out!
Osprey
Canada Geese and goslings

By the group campsite across from the visitor center there was a good deal
of action at the small pond it had me wondering just how many species could
fit in that small space:
Green-winged, Cinnamon and Blue-winged Teals
25-30 White-faced Ibis
Great Yellowlegs
Red-headed Blackbirds
Yellow-headed Blackbirds
Spotted Sandpipers
Killdeer
one Brewer's Blackbird
Great-tailed and Common Grackles

Drove around Horseshoe Lake...not much happening there...just a few
Pied-billed Grebes, some coots

At the little pond just west of Lathrop...just blackbirds and grackles

La Veta Town Lakes were also pretty quiet...except for Common Yellowthroat.
Just wanted to let people know (in case you don't already) that although
the signs at the lake says "MEMBERS ONLY"...THAT IS JUST FOR FISHING...YOU
CAN ENTER AND BIRD THERE.

Went to check for Bobolinks...none yet...but again...lots of Common
Yellowthroat

Meanwhile...back at home we have a pair of Rose-breasted Grosbeaks (1 male,
1 female)
Black-headed Grosbeaks
25-30 Evening Grosbeaks
Pine Siskins (just a few)
Yellow warblers are back in the yard
4 Pinyon Jays came in late this afternoon...a first since we got home.
Black-chinned and Broad-tailed Hummingbirds
Bullock's Oriole (1 male, 1 female)

It is with a heavy heart that we have decided we cannot leave our feeders
up while we are at the convention. We tried leaving them up when we left
for Africa and a bear got to them. Just the evening I came across a fresh
pile of scat down by the creek...we just do not dare leave them up.

In checking our records...it seems all the really good sightings we have
had over the years - Baltimore and Hooded Oriole, Painted Bunting, etc.
have all occurred around the 17th of May! Gad...hope we do not miss
anything while in Trinidad!
