COBirders, Steve Getty and I needed a birding fix this morning and saw some great birds for November. At Quail Lake in Colorado Springs we had a juvenile Sabine's Gull. It was on the near shore near the parking lot. A scaly appearance with the classic white, black and gray triangle pattern on the wings when it flew. I was able to get a few reasonably good photos. Contact me personally if you want to see them.
We were not able to find the Barrow's Goldeneye at Big Johnson. Did see two Common Loons, one adult Bald Eagle and lots of Western and Horned Grebes, plus at least one Eared Grebe and many other more common waterfowl. Also one or two Bonapart's Gull. At Fountain Creek Regional Park and Nature Center, we had a very nice adult Harris's Sparrow at the nature center feeders. At the culvert at the Duckwood Road parking lot/trail access south of the nature center, we re-found the American Dipper reported by Gary Koehn a couple days ago and also the White-throated Sparrow that I have reported about for the last month or so. In addition at the bridge at the northwest end of the nature center pond we heard and saw at least one Swamp Sparrow and a Virginia Rail. We looked for warblers and winter wrens in the area just north of North Rice's Pond and bailed on them, seeing only a Ruby-crowned Kinglet there as it was very windy and I needed to get home.
