"Adventures in Ornithology: Transformations of a Field Science in Sri Lanka"
A University of Colorado Museum of Natural History
and Department of Anthropology Presentation
Join the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History and Department of
Anthropology at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 29 as Professor Arjun Guneratne,
Department of Anthropology, Macalester College, St. Paul, MN presents
"Adventures in Ornithology: Transformation of a Field Science in Sri Lanka."
Guneratne's presentation focuses on the relationship between environmentalism
and globalization in Sri Lanka, examining the shift of Sri Lankan ornithology
from a field science based oncollecting specimens, to modern bird watching, and
relates this shift to social and cultural changes.
Of his research Guneratne explains, "I examine the transformation of
ornithology in its Sri Lankan context and relate it to the rise of a native Sri
Lankan elite during the middle of the 20th century. This is a group who did not
share the values and interests of the British expatriates who had established
ornithology in Sri Lanka." Guneratne emphasizes that this transformation can
be attributed to the development of new technologies such as field guides and
binoculars, and the emergence of a preservationist ethos.

The museum is located in the Henderson Building at 15th Street and Broadway in
Boulder. Limited parking is available to the public in lot #208 on the south
side of the museum. The cost for parking after 5 p.m. at this and all CU

bus (16th and Broadway/Euclid stop).
