I looked for the Northern Parula yesterday that was reported by Rich Miller
on Tuesday on the Canon City Riverwalk by Sell's parking area with no
success. That said, due to the residual smoke from the wildfire just west
of Canon City I only looked within a few hundred feet of the location he
noted due to having asthma. I did bird a larger area today but did not
hear one singing.

I did, however, hear an American Redstart singing vociferously in the
heavily vegetated area by the river nearby the half mile marker. It turned
out to be a 1st spring male. I got a two photos of him that I have
uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog
<http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/>(with photos I took of the
wildfire that came within about a mile of
residences in Canon City directly below).

I also heard at least 4 Warbling Vireos singing in just over a linear mile
of trail.

Remarkable today was the absence of mosquitoes on the bluff trail that I
walked for a half mile. At this time of year and with recent hot temps
there are usually lots of them on the bluff trail since water runs down the
bluff and tends to pool at the bottom making great mosquito habitat. It is
exceedingly dry here with continuing severe drought. There are few other
insects such as butterflies or flies so little bird food so expect reduced
nesting. I did run into mosquitoes right by the water in the river but
few enough I could keep them from biting by swatting or sweeping them off
my arms.
