Hi all,

I finally started my Colorado birding for 2014, in the last two days (very
little birding yesterday and a little more birding today).  My first five days
of the year, were in West Texas, with one day of an unexpected visit to Houston
(because of Flight Delays, getting back to Colorado).

Highlights for me today were:

Pueblo City Park:
Mexican Duck - 1 walking around in the grass by the pond (probably the bird
that has been around Pueblo Reservoir since early December)
missed a greater white-fronted goose, that was seen earlier in the day by other
birders

Pueblo Reservoir:
five species of grebes (one Clark's, no red-necked)
one species of loon (one Common, couldn't find red-throated or pacific which
have been seen this year by others)
four species of gulls (one adult Great Black-backed and one adult Lesser
Black-backed, as well as Ring-billed and Herring, missed mew, glaucous,
thayer's, california, etc.).  There were no gulls at all on the South Shore
Marina tires from 1-3pm, not many gulls on the water either.  I assume the
gulls came in later on, hopefully.
lots of ducks (one male Barrow's Goldeneye, one male Greater Scaup, missed
long-tailed duck)
Also, one Double-crested Cormorant, male Red-breasted Merganser, Canvasbacks,
Redheads, Lesser Scaup, and Ring-necked Duck.

Below the dam:
A Merlin was the best bird.

I and other Pueblo birders continue to search for an american dipper, that was
first found on 12 Dec and seen again 5 Jan.  This species is very rare in
Pueblo, and it seems good at avoiding all the Pueblo birders, as the only
people who see it, are out of town birders.

Pueblo West:
Prairie Falcon, and Lesser Goldfinches, Scaled Quail, and Curve-billed
Thrashers (thanks to Margie Joy for the latter three species).

Happy New Year all,

Brandon Percival
Pueblo West, CO
