Birders,

The warbler fallout at Tempel Grove in NE Bent County was, simply, fantastic
today. I met Janeal Thompson and Jane Stulp around noon today, and we
located ten warbler species this afternoon. We had multiples of some species
you don't ordinarily think you will see one of in a day. Our list included:
two Orange-crowned Warblers, one Tennessee Warbler, two Ovenbirds, one
Yellow Warbler, 30 Wilson's Warblers, one Black-and-White Warbler, four
American Redstarts, two Black-throated Green Warblers (together!), one
Yellow-breasted Chat, one MacGillivray's Warbler.

We converged there because I had a male Townsend's Warbler and six other
warbler species there yesterday. Yesterday was marked with numerous
individuals of multiple species of Empidonax flycatchers and Contopus
flycatchers. Today, the flycatchers were down in numbers, but we did see one
male Baltimore Oriole, Plumbeous and Cassin's Vireos, and three
Great-crested Flycatchers. Other more expected species were around, too.

Most of the action was west of County Road 35, although the flock moved to
the bridge by the end of our visit at 3:45 p.m.

Many of you know I work to keep endangered Piping Plovers and Least Terns
from disappearing as Colorado nesting bird species. For those interested,
the US Army Corps of Engineers (Albuquerque District) is one of my
employers. Every year, on the last Saturday in September, we take part in
National Public Lands Day. We try to do manual labor on the most critical
point at John Martin Reservoir to reclaim essential beach habitat from
invasive vegetation, and almost every year, Piping Plovers nest on exactly
the habitat we work on in September. If you are interested in helping,
please notify me in advance. We can provide you with a free campsite, and
some perks including water and snacks, possibly a lunch or a free one-day
entrance pass to a federal fee area (National Forest, Park or Monument). I
hope to hear from you.
