Here is a little more information on the Blue-winged Warbler found today at
Welchester Tree Park. After walking the wooded trail and finding 4
Orange-crowned Warblers, 1 Wilson's Warbler, and a calling Dusky Flycatcher, I
walked over to the eastern boundary of the park. This is the location were the
Blue-winged Warbler was seen last year. Far to the NW I could here the buzzy
call of the Blue-winged Warbler. I crossed the creek to the north and walked
uphill to the boundary with the elementary school. I could hear the call but
it was well to the east of this corner in private property. After pishing, the
bird moved closer until he was in view. The bird continued to call but moved
back to private property well to the east. This afternoon, Loch Kilpatrick
refound the bird in last year's location. The park is just west of 8th and
Simms. I feel very confident that this is last year's bird. This is the third
time in very recent time a rare Blue-winged Warbler has been seen in the park.
Is there a chance the bird is successful in his attempt to breed well east in
private property? Why has no one seen a female if so? Why would a bird return
without having success the year before? Is he hybridizing with a yellow? Who
knows...Photos of the bird can be seen below:
