Started with fog; sun finally came out about 9:30. A slow and slightly
strange morning bird-wise. In addition to the usual birds that we've been
seeing the past few days, we caught 2 VERY COMMON birds that we almost
never catch at this station - a starling and a magpie. Both of these
species have big, bold personalities and are beautiful birds in the hand,
with lots of iridescent feathers. The magpie was especially exciting for
us, because today's crew had never had one in the hand. (We last caught
one in 2008.) Amanda, who just finished 2 weeks banding in Chico and was
out visiting today, and I agreed that the BBMA made today worthwhile!
Here's the rundown of the 18 new for the day:

Black-billed Magpie 1
Black-capped Chickadee 2
European Starling 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 3
Spotted Towhee 2
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 5
Dark-eyed Junco, Pink-sided 1
House Sparrow 3

This is our last week - we will take down the station after banding on
Sunday, 10/11. Our closed day this week is Thursday, 10/8. We are opening
nets about 6:45, and running until noon or whenever it gets too hot or too
windy or too slow or too whatever. School groups arrive about 9:30 a.m.
most weekdays.
