Age: 96 Residence: Greeley Born in Naperville, Ill., to Edward N. Himmel (Botany Professor) and Katherine Ruth Speicher Himmel (Music Teacher) on Dec. 10, 1920. Joe graduated from North Central College with a BA in 1942 and then received a masters in music from Northwestern College in 1947. In between Joe did alternative service during WWII, serving on a Liberty ship that hit a mine in the Mediterranean Sea. He spent the next six months trekking with his fellow survivors across Greece to find safe passage home. On return, he attended Northwestern University and took his first position as a Professor of Music at Bowling Green State University. He moved his young family in 1961 to Greeley to take a job at what was then Colorado State College. Over the years Joe gave numerous recitals at Bowling Green State University, Northwestern University, and CSC/ University of Northern Colorado. He retired from UNC in 1984 after teaching for 23 years. Joe’s other passions were birding on the prairies of eastern Colorado and participating in masters swimming. He is loved by his extended family and many friends and will be dearly missed. Joe passed away on Dec. 28, 2016, which was 10 years to the day after the passing of his beloved wife, Virginia. He is survived by his sons, Michael Himmel of Golden and Peter Himmel of Benton City, Wash.; daughters, Susan Himmel of Homer, Alaska, Sarah Himmel of Ault; granddaughters, Lindsey Himmel York of Reno, Nev., Caitlin Himmel Bareither of Honolulu, Hawaii, Maddy Himmel of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Olivia Himmel of Ault and Isabelle Himmel of Ault; and great-grandson, Samuel York of Reno, Nevada. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Olive Himmel of Greeley; sister, Martha Himmel Johnson of Conway, Ark. A celebration of life will be from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017, at the home of Kristi and Larry Kilpatrick, 1857 13th Ave., Greeley. Cremains scattered at Crow Creek Campground on the Pawnee National Grassland at a later date. as sent by Dick Maxfield to me today.
