Hello, everybody. Dave Leatherman wrote yesterday about a plumbeous vireo that popped in for a mid-month visit at Grandview Cemetery up in Larimer County. Cool. And I have a tale of my own. In the 2am hour this hazy Saturday morning, June 17, I could hear a *sora* and a *pied-billed grebe* singing in the marsh at Greenlee Preserve, Boulder County. Both were FOYs for me at the site. Well, almost. Actually, Andrew Floyd and I had heard the sora a few hours earlier, back on the evening of June 16. I hope they stick around. Anyhow, I concur with Dave's assessment that these mid-June wanderers are interesting.
During the daylight hours today, the sora and pied-billed grebe were still going at it. Lots of other nice birds out there, with an even 50 species for me for the day: off-and-on forays from the house, all on foot, to encompass the entire "Greater Greenlee Ecosystem," including Waneka Lake, Hecla Lake, Thomas Open Space, and environs. The species list follows. Nothing shocking, but a decent variety, or so I opine. Here goes: Canada goose, wood duck, mallard, redhead, hooded merganser, pied-billed grebe, western grebe, double-crested cormorant, American white pelican, great blue heron, snowy egret, osprey, Cooper hawk, Swainson hawk, red-tailed hawk, sora, American coot, killdeer, rock pigeon, Eurasian collared-dove, African collared-dove, mourning dove, belted kingfisher, downy woodpecker, northern flicker, American kestrel, Say phoebe, western kingbird, blue jay, black-billed magpie, American crow, common raven, violet-green swallow, cliff swallow, barn swallow, black-capped chickadee, bushtit, house wren, American robin, European starling, common yellowthroat, yellow warbler, song sparrow, red-winged blackbird, western meadowlark, common grackle, brown-headed cowbird, house finch, American goldfinch, house sparrow.
