I headed to NE Colorado today, birding the big reservoirs with John Vanderpoel.
Goose numbers were massive; we easily saw over 100,000 geese of five types
between those along I-76 in Morgan County and huge flocks at Jumbo, North
Sterling and Prewitt Reservoirs. Snow, Cackling, Ross's, Canada, and
Greater-white Fronted in order of abundance. The white geese were all along
I-76 in Morgan, at Prewitt (Washington) and in the Sedgwick side of Jumbo.
GWFG noted included 7 in a field at the corner of Red-Lion Road and US 138 in
Logan, 5 each at Jumbo (Sedgwick) and Prewitt (Washington)

What we missed included any loons or scoters. We also failed to find recently
reported rarities like Black-legged Kittiwake and Snow Bunting.

Unusual birds included a single Sandhill Crane flying right along I-76 in
Morgan County west of Wiggins and a single Common Redpoll in the shelter belt
along the road at the west entrance to North Sterling State Park. Prewitt
(Washington) also had three Bonaparte's Gulls and an Iceland (Thayer's)

North winds were howling at Jumbo and North Sterling, but by the time we made
it to Prewitt conditions had calmed down noticeably.
