I spent a much needed day afield yesterday making a 160 mile loop through the south San Luis valley. There are still a few thousand Sandhill Cranes around. They leave the MV Refuge at first light and then head north to various grainfields.
Up Conejos Canyon (Conejos Cty), the familiar drumming of the Williamson's Sapsuckers was heard and was a sure sign of spring. There still is a lot of snow up there and the road to Platoro was closed. Sagebrush Sparrows were present along the county roads east of Antonito (Conejos Cty). The roads have dried out now and are very passable. Still would recommend high clearance vehicle. A Horned Grebe was near the south shore of Smith reservoir in Costilla County yesterday. We have only a handful of records for this species in the Valley so a good find. Changes are happening....
