All,
After digging deeper, i.e. having Sibley in my hand, I change my opinion on the
owl to
Long-eared as well. The field mark that convinces me is the size of the buffy
patch on the
wing -- it is too small and localized to be Short-eared Owl.
With birding you learn something new every day.

To all -I am leaning very strongly to short-eared in that the face is very

Hey all,After consulting Sibley, I would say Long-eared. Sibley shows the
wingtips of the long-eared to have fine barring whereas on the short-eared, the
markings are much heavier. In looking at the photos aside from the length of
the ear tufts, which look like long-eared, the wingtips match the long-eared in

All,
Surely, the bird is a Short-eared owl. Long-eared should have a rusty facial
disk and the big "wrist"
comma is typical of Short-eared. Long-eared should look darker on the body.

Hi Gary,
The barring on the flanks should indicate that it is a long eared owl.
Short-eared should not show that.

Hi all
The owl we found on Pawnee NG trip over weekend continues to be an ongoing
debate-some have said Short-eared others Long-eared. I was hoping your help can
help definitively ID this owl. Made a collage of available photos.
