It was open today. The road is snow-free until the last couple of miles up to
the Bierstadt Trail parking. Check this website for current conditions…

Yaktrax were handy on some sections of the trail (if you find 1… it’s mine!). I
walked the main Bierstadt Trail up to this point 39.593444, -105.695858 and
then veered off trail to the left. There are lots of small willows to walk
through and plenty of completely frozen pools and a frozen creek to cross. Some
of the snow was knee deep, but the rest was fairly shallow.

Good luck.

Is the pass still open?

Lots of bushwhacking needed to get to them. They were very active flying
between evergreens and feeding at the edge of a frozen beaver pond.

Many thanks to Sondra and Bob.

Bob and I went up to Guanella Pass today (11/25/22) to try for Ptarmigan at
Guanella Pass and didn't see any, but we had a very nice consolation prize, a
flock of 24 Bohemian Waxwings. They were about 1.5 miles from the Mt Bierstadt
trailhead, in the upper meadow NE of the trail. They stayed in the area feeding
and flying around and putting on a stunning show for the entire time we were
there, at least 2 hours.
