Allegra Collister Nature Preserve Bird Banding Station is a migration banding station that operates in May and mid-August to mid-October each year and is located between Boulder and Lyons, CO. We are seeking additional volunteers in three roles to support the banding efforts. Ideal candidates will be able to commit to multiple years and 1-3 days per week. In Fall 2023, we are in particular need of someone who can volunteer on Wednesday mornings through October 20th.
Bird Bander and/or Mist Net Extractor - We are looking for one or more individuals who have experience bird banding and/or extracting songbirds from mistnets. Most of our bird banders also do net runs and extract birds but this isn’t required. If interested, please respond with a summary of your interest and experience. ***Our bander training track is at capacity and cannot accommodate additional trainees at this time.*** Data Recorder - We are seeking someone who is interested in recording data during the bird banding process. This person should be interested in birds and science, be able to legibly write numbers and letters, and be able to handle information being given by two banders simultaneously. This role does not require previous experience recording bird banding data. What to expect - Schedule: We operate Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for 5 hours starting 15 minutes before sunrise (plus ~30 minutes for closing/cleanup). In spring, start times can be as early as 5am, and in the fall 6am. - Walking conditions: The trails are narrow, undulating, and with occasional low rocks or tree roots to step over/around. Those doing mistnet extraction should expect to walk 3-4 miles per morning while doing net runs (the data recorder would not be expected to do net runs). Extractors should be able to walk a half mile in 15 minutes. - We will have 3-5 volunteers as part of the banding team each morning. There is a possibility of leaving a bit before closing time to accommodate a late start to a work day or other needs. - Ticks and (few) mosquitos do occur at this site and all volunteers should take precautions. - Capture rates at this banding station are slow but steady (typically 15-30 birds/day). - All individuals involved with the station are volunteers with Bird Conservancy of the Rockies [ https://www.birdconservancy.org/get-involved/volunteer/].
