I found the best way once the adult coat comes in to leave it between 1 and 1 1/2 inches, anything more ends up matting which is uncomfortable for the dog, I tried longer and no matter which way any of them were brushed they matted.  All of them had wavy hair as puppies, as adults each one is curlier now.
