If you expose any scripting interface then people might get frustrated when their Frobdignag 2008 scripts don't work when they upgrade to Frobdignag 2009, even though the scripting dictionary hasn't changed. iTunes changes version number more frequently than most people change underwear, with the expectation that users only have one version installed at a time.
