It never happened to me before, and it didn't happen after I replaced the 
batik-all.jar with a version a few days older. Does anyone know what changed in batik? 

Anyway, thanks to Tony Becker for the Xvfb tip. I'll try it out. Shouldn't we document 
the workaround?
