I think it has to do with a number of factors.

The Component pools use the more efficient Buffer classes,
There are a number of improvements in the JDBC pooling code,
We have a new Xerces and Xalan.  I think the latest round of
cache tuning is the biggest improvement.

Either that or the Xalan 2.2 jar.
