Vadim,

off my head it's "-D '2002-04-20'" (date tag) but I really used
cervisia (KDE cvs frontend) which has an option for that...

So it should be something like 
cvs -z3 -d:ext:cvs.apache.org:/home/cvs checkout -D '2002-04-20' xml-cocoon2
