The problem can be because there is no direct support into Cocoon for the JDBC for Pervasive. Try to write a specific helper class. PostgreSQL has one.

Sounds like it's either the mode of the ResultSet and/or the JDBC driver itself.
Sorry - but I really doubt it's ESQL. ESQL should be a very light wrapper around straight JDBC. No heavy processing involved...
