Well, whilst you are completely right about not committing to anything unless there's a working running demo on your own machine, at the same time it's irresponsible to the community (be it developers, users, businesses, whatever) to not only completely trash the demo material but to also break the archive of working versions. That's forcibly pulling people's pants down if you ask me!
