I think you misunderstood what I was saying. Let's say I am using a Netscape
Browser from a Solaris system. Using your method, you are relying on browser
intelligence to launch an executable on a system. However, you might not
have the executable loaded on the system. In that case, you will not be able
to see the information presented. It is my understanding that POI project is
about reading Excel format and presenting it without using Excel. This way
you can present the information regardless of the browser, device and other
variations. IMHO, I think that is a pretty cool idea!!!!

IE opens Excel without any prompt inside itself

while netscape just throws a dialog box "What you wanna do with this
file"
If you hit open - Netscape starts Excel and Excel opens you html file
