Eureka! Thanks, Holger & everyone. I started again, downloaded 2.0.4 source, followed the instructions to build using: build -Dinclude.webapp.libs=yes -Dinclude.scratchpad.libs=yes webapp copied the jars below and it all now works.
Now to figure out how to add some useful apps to the portal.
