Have the cocos2d devs considered entering Google Summer of Code? I
would love to work on cocos2d this summer-- it's really a great
framework, and I actually have some experience using it and looking at
the internals (unlike many alternative projects). The problem is that
from what I understand, I can't apply to work on cocos2d for GSoC
unless cocos2d applies to get a mentor on board.
