It worked. It's unclear to me what caused the confusion.

Regarding the original question about fps:  I managed to get a constant 60 
by using vsync=False, pg.clock.set_fps_limit(30) and a pg.clock.tick() in 
one of my draw() functions. It's an inelegant workaround, but seems to 
work. Strangely, the showFPS seems to be double of whatever I set fps_limit 
as.
