BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - Suspected paramilitary gunmen kidnapped a member
of a parliamentary peace
commission, and a senator was abducted in a separate
incident, authorities said. In addition, Antanas
Mockus, a candidate for mayor of Bogota in the upcoming Oct.
29 elections, was detained for several
hours Sunday by leftist rebels as he campaigned south of the
capital. He was then released, police said.
The abductions underscored the increasingly lawlessness in
Colombia, with the state unable to provide
security in vast areas as leftist rebels and a rival
right-wing paramilitary group fight for control of
many parts of the South American nation.
