Live P2P Streaming: Design and Challenges

Peer-to-peer (P2P) overlays offer a promising approach to stream multimedia
from a single source to a large number of users over the Internet without any
special support from the network. Design of a scalable P2P streaming mechanism
that accommodates heterogeneity of peers' bandwidth and copes with dynamics of
peer participation while ensuring in-time delivery of the multimedia content to
individual peers is extremely challenging. Besides these fundamental
challenges, P2P streaming applications are facing practical issues such as the
following: (i) incentivizing the resource contribution and dealing with
free-loaders specially when the aggregate resources (i.e. bandwidth) is not
sufficient to deliver the full quality stream to all peers, (ii) providing QoS
in presence of poor connectivity among peers (e.g. biased and clustered
connectivity), and (iii) decreasing the costly inter-ISP P2P traffic while
ensuring a desirable performance for P2P streaming systems. In this talk, I
will discuss challenges in the design as well as practical issues of live P2P
streaming systems. In particular, I will describe my work on performance-driven
design of a scalable live P2P streaming system. Further, to touch on some
practical issues, I will present the design of an ISP-friendly P2P streaming
mechanism that minimizes the inter-ISP traffic while ensuring the delivery of
high quality stream to peers. Finally, I will briefly discuss future directions
of my research.
