Kofi A.A. Makinwa Professor, Delft University of Technology Abstract: Today, the most energy-efficient ADCs are based on either successive approximation or on ΣΔ modulation. SAR ADC’s are more energy efficient, while ΣΔ ADCs can achieve higher resolution. In this talk, it will be shown how both high energy efficiency and high resolution can be achieved by combining both these approaches in a so-called zoom ADC. As a case study, the design of a state-of-the-art zoom ADC will be presented. It achieves 107.5dB DR and 104.4dB SNR in a 20kHz bandwidth while dissipating only 1.65mW and occupying only 0.16mm2.
