PEARL JAM
Members of Pearl Jam say they're "devastated" by the deaths of eight of
their fans during a concert in Denmark Friday night.
The tragedy took place during one of Europe's largest rock festivals -
an annual event held on the grounds of a farm in Roskilde, not far from
Copenhagen. Festival organizers said the victims, all males, apparently lost
their footing as the crowd pushed toward the stage - ignoring warnings from
security guards and the band that the people in front were being crushed.
The ground around the stage was reportedly muddy due to recent rainfall.
In a statement released Saturday, Pearl Jam expressed sorrow about the
incident and said they could not have imagined such a tragedy occurring.
"There are absolutely no words to express our anguish in regard to the
parents and loved ones of these precious lives that were lost," the
Seattle-based band said. "We have not yet been told what actually occurred,
but it seemed to be random and sickeningly quick. It doesn't make sense."
The statement was signed: "Devastated, Pearl Jam."
