Hmmm... actually, there was originally a big - almost political - 
difference between rock'n'roll and rhythm'n'blues. The latter was the 
original black music, and the first one was white imitation of it... 
(Of course the situation changed later...)

In fifties, many radio stations in USA didn't play rhythm'n'blues at 
all, because it was black music. Some white musicians noticed their 
chance: they started to make similar music that was called 
"rock'n'roll" (there really was no need for a separate term, but you 
can see racism even in this small detail: the same stuff by white 
folks had to be called something else than rhythm'n'blues to clear 
out that it wasn't just some nigger music). Now those radio stations 
_could_ play that music, because it was made by whiteys. The American 
racism of fifties gave the birth to rock'n'roll... Otherwise all that 
sinful music maybe would've called rhythm'n'blues...

All that said, I like old rock'n'roll too... It... just... rocks.
