I am no expert on the matter but US and European (at least Finnish)
copyright legistlation differ to some extent. Few points about the
Finnish copyright law that I think differ from US (but I am not sure
about this, so if someone knows better, lemme know):

        - Finnish law says that it's okay to use parts of other people's
artwork if combined they produce a new piece independent of the
source(s). I think this isn't so in the US. (I don't know whether there
have been any court cases about sampling in this matter, but in the fine
arts ("kuvataide") scene collage and readymade art have been branches
that have tested the law..)
        - In Finland there are two artists' rights that _can not_ be sold or
given away, being "isyysoikeus" (the right to be aknowledged as the
creator of a piece of art) and "respektio-oikeus" (the right to take
juridical actions if an artwork is used in a such a way that it insults
the artist). I think that these can be sold in the US, but I'm not sure.
