If you're talking about pc-side in general, the answer is Ecasound
for Linux: http://www.eca.cx
If you're talking about Wintel side, there isn't any freeware choice,
but a good shareware proggy called Multiquence does the thing you're
looking for. http://www.goldwave.com/multiquence/
Some freatures. From Maz Sound Tools site:
- 45$ shareware, nice straight forward multitrack digital audio processor
- includes all basic functions you need: flanger, EQ, pan, speed,
volumes envelopes
- all functions work realtime, but there's a catch: the only thing
you really can adjust while playing are the channel volume
- sliders
- master volume (incl. level meter), track volume, Mute and Solo controls
- editing/playback markers, drag-and-drop editing, multiple undo-levels
- sequences can consist of digital audio (WAV ...), CD audio, MIDI
and video streams
- supports multiple recording sections, for each section you can
choose record device and input source (mic, line, CD, midi)
- does not support multiple devices for playback
- zoom in and out commands
- multiple section selection, editing, and drag-and-drop, selection
groups with names
- support for MP3 and MS-Audio compressed .wav files
- dynamic panning
- DirectShow audio plug-in support
- video support inlc. DirectMedia video plug-in support
- master control window with video window, playback controls, VU
meters and volume control
