after listening to this discussion, it occurs to me that the Gnome 
and KDE task bars are broken, simply bcos they are cluttered with 
icons for programs I don't use, and the rectangles for open windows 
are squashed (not changeable) and in more than one row (changeable, 
but already the labels are too narrow to be readable, partly bcos 
[for example] F'ing Netscape insists on starting each window's name 
with "Netscape", which pushes out the Html page title).
