it hasn't gone anywhere. its been there all the time. i never heard of
progressive trance but i do know progressive house, which in turn was
quite pop back in 92/94 in the uk (and elsewhere in clubland too). It
was just a bit harder and faster sound than other house music of its
time, going up and above 130 bpm. imo it was quit strict continuation of
breakbeat-genre moving up to straight beats without the cheesy
rave-stabs and horns (and breaks, duh).
progressive house was energetic, like most old breakbeat stuff, without
being so cheesy, so it was acceptable in club land. i guess it was
progression of some sort - the audience grew up so they could go to
clubs (instead of [il]legal raves) and clubs didn't want to play cheesy
rave and breaks, which created the need for new musical genre.
prime examples would probably be "transamerican" by sublime,
"i trance you", "skinnybumblebee" by gipsy, "packet of peace" by
lionrock, most of the records from cleveland city records.. and so on.
and apollo 440, too. generally it was sort of mixup of old acid,
breakbeat, housegrooves and noises from techno of its time.
i know there has recently been another boom of progressive house but i
have no idea whatsoever what sort of stuff that is.
