Incidentally, superficially it looks like SQL multi-row insert would be a good
fit here; see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insert_%28SQL%29#Multirow_inserts.
The problem is that this syntax does too little to distinguish between row keys
and column names; while this is okay for insert-as-insert it is baffling for
insert-as-update. UPDATE is also a better semantic fit since people are used
to seeing that with a sparse list of column names.
