I'll note that this touch pretty critical parts of the code and is "just a
performance improvement" so I personally would like to see at least some
numbers of how effictive this actually is in practice before considering
inclusion to 2.1. Everyone is always complaining that new releases take a long
time to get really stable but it won't change until we stop waiting for the .7
or .8 version of a particular release to consider only bug fix for admission.
