OK, I'm +1, but I think we should consider filing a couple of follow up tickets:
# To honour disk failure policy on startup if we fail to read a descriptor (or
something similar, rather than always fail)
# To not discard hints if we have a transient write error (but to discard them
if errors persist for too long)
These might be unimportant if we intend to deliver CASSANDRA-9834, however.
