[~beobal] Final changes are done - all in the same branch. Now, admittedly,
that last commit could use a little bit of isolated unit testing. And I promise
I'll add some before 4.0.0 is cut. But I need to get this in - with the overall
patch being this size, constant rebasing on trunk is expensive, and I'm tired,
and I won't go through it again.
