agree. I recently sent a patch for CASSANDRA-15674, this is a regression in
3.0. Metrics are under tested but super important for operating a cluster, so
we need to improve our testing of metrics.

Yeah thats where they are easier to regress. CASSANDRA-15674 only happens
during compaction interruption (or disk failure)...
